ThINC Nature House: Sunday, Aug 28

9:00 - 11:00 am: Harvest Hours at the PAG, Lot 62 North Cove Road (all ages)

Today is the last scheduled day to visit the People's Apothecary Garden this summer! Drop by during our open hours: 9-11 to explore the space and/or harvest some plants! With the help from community volunteers and our wonderful summer employees, Linnea and Connelly, the garden is now at a place in which it can 'almost' self maintain for the remainder of the season! The medicinal plants are well-established and are able to keep the grasses and buttercup at bay, and hardy enough to withstand the drier conditions. Although we've planted some new botanical fellows, we've decided to wait until the rains come to plant the rest. After many days of digging, the path is now wider throughout - which is super helpful for workshops and walks, and for the Thetis Island School kids to zoom around more effectively!

Thank you to everyone who visited the garden this summer, and a big thanks to all of our volunteers who gave us a hand at the PAG and/or shared their plant knowledge!

Open hours at the PAG will continue weekly throughout the fall until the space is put to rest for the winter (late Oct). For details on when, keep your eyes peeled on eSPOKES and/or on our website: www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org

Thank you!

Extreme Hazard Conditions

Thank you all for your patience…it has been one week since we entered EXTREME hazard and despite some good humidity recovery in the mornings, the winds negate that effect by the afternoon.  All fire weather stations around us remain at 5 (EXTREME) and the Cowichan Valley fire halls have been kept busy with mutual aid to extinguish human-caused bush fires.  Ladysmith Fire had to response last week to a chap burning garden weeds with a tiger torch!  Mt. Hayes, behind Ladysmith, has a small lightning strike fire still burning but we were fortunate to not have any fire starts popping up here from the lightning storm ten days ago.

This is prime vacation time, and your volunteer fire fighters also like to get off the rock and visit and go camping etc. and, since we are not a very big department and have no mutual aid coming to help us out, we appreciate your vigilance in keeping fires from starting.

It looks like we have another week of EXTREME conditions ahead of us.  No High Hazard activities such as metal blade mowing, road building, gas chainsawing etc. are allowed.  We should be getting back to cooler temperatures and rain soon. Just not this week.  Remember, we need to drop to HIGH for three days before we can open up again to early-shift activities.   We will keep you informed.  TIVFD

OUTLOOK: A warming and drying trend begins Sunday across the South Coast as a ridge of high pressure builds along the Rockies. While above-seasonal temperatures are once again in the forecast, temperatures will not get as high as our current heat.

Sawmill

Our new sawmill has arrived so we are ready to take inquiries or bookings for log sawing and/or lumber.

It is capable of milling logs with up to 30" buts up to 32' long. The design, engineering, materials are all above and beyond the class producing an excellent product we anticipate, Our target startup is right after the Labour Day weekend. Theoretically, as the saw is on a trailer to make it potable, we would have to disconnect all but the first 10.5 feet of carriage. We would have to be doing a very large order to justify all of that.

We have a 24' flatdeck to pickup your logs with and deliver your sawn lunber. I am not currently licensed to grade the lumber

Our cell service is pathetic here so reach myself, David by text at 250-210-4745 or better yet email:littleislander@protonmail.com.

ThINC Nature House: Friday, Aug 26

Today is the last day to visit the Nature House this summer! Tomorrow, Saturday, August 27th there are no events as we will be in cleaning mode, and on Sunday we will be at the PAG in the morning :)

2:00 - 4:00 pm: Junior Biologist - Naturific - at the Nature House (kids 8 - 12)
For our final Junior Biologist session of the summer, we will explore the scientific method and our natural surroundings. Participants will come up with hypotheses and test them with experiments. We will also be doing the classic egg drop contest, where participants create a safety mechanism for their egg to be dropped from increasing heights. It's pretty fun stuff!

4:00 - 6:00 pm: Seaquarium Creature Release starts at the Nature House (all ages)
Help us release your favourite denizens of the touch tank! We will meet at the Nature House and release the creatures that can be let go at the shore. Then we will place the next group of animals in bags and take them to Lot 214 - Brown / Waddell, where we will hand them off to a group of divers who will SCUBA dive them back to the depth they came from. Andy Lamb and Bill Golley, who collected the animals in the touch tank will be there to answer any last questions about your favourite creature! If you would like to meet at the Lot 214 instead of starting at the Nature House, you are welcome to do so. Everyone please park on the side of Pilkey Point Road and walk down the driveway. The creatures should arrive there around 4:45.
