Yellow Weather Alert Update

The Yellow weather notification sent for British Columbia earlier this week has been updated. A ridge of high pressure will strengthen early next week. It will bring an extended period of hot and dry weather. Next week’s heat is not expected to be as extreme as June 2021; however, it still poses a risk of heat related illness. The areas most likely to reach Heat Warning criteria early next week are the Central and Southwestern Interior, Peace region, South Coast (including Vancouver Island), and inland sections of the North and Central Coasts. In addition to the risk of heat related illness, fire danger will gradually increase in response to prolonged heat and dry conditions.

We have asked Emcon highways maintenance to try to get a final mowing of the roadside  edges before this heat wave but have not yet heard back.  However, while we wait and are still in MODERATE for the next few days, if you are able to mow or weed whack your property frontage along the road, this greatly assists with the safety of our summer pedestrians and also lowers the risk of grass fires from tossed cigarette butts.

Thanks!

Upcoming Nature House Presentation

As your island marine naturalist person, I strongly suggest that you come to the Nature House this Saturday at 1000 hrs. Conservationist/scientist Sheila Byres will be talking about the glass sponge reefs of British Columbia. These structures are unique and special in the marine environment and are in desperate need of protection. Sheila is an excellent and entertaining speaker who champions this effort.

TIRRA GM this Saturday, July 23rd 3PM

In the 2 e-spokes posting regarding the upcoming GM, we offered to answer questions submitted by July 17th and post results by July 20th. Two residents sent queries.

One query was for a more detailed summary of the three budget 2023 scenarios.

The second query had several points:
- were small island comparables appropriate?
- was a local hauler/supplier considered?
- is a paid position to collect fees the best method?
- how were usage estimates arrived at?
and more.

A 3 scenario budget worksheet and a recap of the second query questions and responses is posted on the Community website on the Community tab>Waste Management:
