Some of you may have heard a “boom” at 6:38 pm Friday evening. That was the Canadian Military, accompanied by the TIVFD, at an undisclosed location, blowing up a US Military Incendiary Marine Marker that had washed ashore on a Thetis beach Friday morning.
If you find any strange looking objects, especially ones that say DO NOT HANDLE - CALL EMERGENCY SERVICES, please don’t touch the device. Call 911 or the Fire Department. Please tell your kids to not touch and to tell an adult if they discover something metallic and strange on the beach, and then you can alert us.
The ordinance that was dealt with Friday evening was still live and explosive and could have injured somebody if not handled properly by the trained experts.

Anyone who utilizes the tennis court on a regular basis, please be advised the tennis court at Forbes Hall will be closed from 4pm Friday, Aug 16th to roughly 4pm Saturday, Aug 17th for Family Fun Day games.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and we appreciate your understanding. This annual one-day closure is to allow us time for set up and take down of fun games for both kids and adults to enjoy this Saturday.

A reminder that we have two events scheduled for this weekend:
Saturday, Aug 17 - Garden Gnome Treasure Hunt at the PAG (10 am start)
On your way to Family Fun Day, drop by the Peoples Apothecary Garden (62 North Cove Rd) for a treasure hunt through the PAG and for some tasty herbal delights! For those who are not familiar with the PAG, it is just a short, 2-min walk from Forbes Hall.
Note: Today's event will be now starting at 10am (vs 11am as previously stated).
Sunday, August 18 - 'Voices for the Islands' Book Launch at Forbes Hall (2pm start)
Author Sheila Harrington will be presenting her book 'Voices for the Islands: Thirty Years of Nature Conservation in the Salish Sea'.
"Voices for the Islands brings together the stories and experiences of those who rose to protect areas at risk within their island communities. Narratively linked by author Sheila Harrington’s three-year sailing journey among the islands to interview more than fifty veteran conservationists, the book shares an in-depth view of local protests and the history and evolution of local conservancies from their timely emergence through legal battles and successful partnerships. It highlights how local, provincial, and national support was won, through the collaborative efforts of dedicated locals, resulting in hundreds of new protected areas and parks within one of the most at-risk ecological communities in Canada—the islands of the Salish Sea." (Heritage House Publishing)
Books will be for sale! And refreshments will be served! More about this special, place-based book:
