Thetis Island Community Fund and the Family Fun Day

The Thetis Island Community Fund and the Family Fun Day Volunteers are excited to welcome everyone to the Thetis Island Family Fun Day tomorrow, Saturday August 6th, at 11:00 at Forbes Hall.  All are welcome!

Just two final details:

- Parking will be exclusively on the Mission Road shoulder and in the school parking lot to keep the Forbes Hall parking area open and safe during the day’s events.

- Free up some space in your change jars and bring some loonies and toonies (or smaller coins) in order to have a chance at soaking a willing participant in the Thetis Island version of a Dunk Tank. All other games are free. All denominations will be accepted for the $10 BBQ with change available.

Donations welcome.

See you tomorrow!

Yellow Weather Warning

Yellow weather notification for British Columbia. A ridge of high pressure is building over B.C. this weekend and will bring a short period of heat. Heat Warnings are possible for parts of the coast, Southern Interior and possibly Central Interior, but not likely for the entire area as temperatures are marginal for this event. Heat Warning criteria may be met as early as Sunday, August 7th. The hot spell seems to end Wednesday or Thursday (August 10 or 11th) after which there is a likelihood of thunderstorms over southern B.C. The hot and dry weather will bring a risk of heat related illness and increased fire danger. Lightning from thunderstorms that follow the heat event may increase the potential of new wildfire activity and gusty winds from thunderstorms may further enhance the spread of wildfires.

The TIVFD asks that you keep a lookout for smoke columns and report sightings to 911.  Campfires have been prohibited everywhere except Haida Gwaii at this time.  We are still in HIGH Hazard rating but this may change over the weekend.  Proceeding with an abundance of caution, you can still work with spark producing machinery (mowers, chainsaws etc.) in grass or forest before 1 pm provided you set a two hour fire watch afterwards.

Reworked thetisisland.net

thetisisland.net was set up in 2006, so it was getting pretty arthritic when it came to working on all the new devices available today.  I've re-coded it so it resizes for different devices, but it's a very deep site after all these years.  Please let me know if there are links that are broken or missing, or if there is something that doesn't work on your machine/phone/tablet/whatever. Particularly, please check the link for the ferry webcam - that's a puzzle.  As of last night, some could get the webcam image, and some not. As before, it's meant to be an easy reference site for finding your way to all the different organizations on Thetis, local business links, or sites that are useful to islanders, with a bit of explanation for newcomers.  If you think of anything to add, please let me know that too.  It's not meant to compete with or take the place of any of the other sites on the island - more like an on-line version of the phone book, helping you to get where you want to go.

Thanks in advance for any issues you notice, or critiques, or suggestions!

Post Office Updates

I will be splitting my shift with Zola Blue.  This affords an assurance of continuity if I get sick or injured (which, given last month is a definite probability) and vice versa.  Please extend Zola all of the gracious courtesy that you have extended me over the last 2 months (yep it has been 2 months).

In regards to parcels:

-  Parcels going to Europe have to be EXACT in their addressing.  One misspell and they get kicked back.  I discussed this with my neighbour who has been sending parcels to the Czech Republic for years and he had one kicked back because he used a c instead of a k even though he had the postal code.

-  Tags.  A few of you have asked me to leave small parcels in your postal box.  For me to do that I have to scan the parcel out and accept responsibility for what happens to the parcel.  Not my role.  That is why you have to come to the PO and get it scanned out so I know you have your parcel.

-  If you don't have a tag but have an email tracking code that is fine ()phone or paper).  But don't come down with the old tag later and expect a parcel.

Hours:

We are open Monday to Saturday.  Would appreciate parcel pick up after 1230 as we use the mornings to sort and deliver to the PO boxes.  We then grab lunch and are ready to go.  However if you are there in the morning for whatever reason we can give you a parcel if you have one.

This week has been a mess due to the ferry going down twice.  Travis managed to get 3 days worth of mail to me at 3:30PM yesterday.  I will try to have all of the mail in the boxes by 1230 and will scan parcels all day to catch up.  Hoping to be back on schedule today and caught up by Friday afternoon.

Terry Martin you need to come in and get your PO box key

Chaisson/Van Kleef you left your keys in the mail box door you can find them at the PO

A question I get asked a lot is what are the Pub/restaurant hours: Thursday to Monday 11:30 to 7:PM.  Kitchen closes at 6:30PM.  Closed Tuesday and Wednesday

Saturday Market

Our Saturday Market vendors are diverse, bringing their many talents to the market each week.

Frank English is what I like to call a Wood Artist. He takes Thetis Island sourced wood and creates pens, mechanical pencils, sketch pencils and other assorted items into wonderful gift ideas for someone special,a memento of your stay on Thetis Island or perhaps a personal treat.

Pat English is an amazing artist when it comes to her unique handmade children's clothing. She uses only top quality European fabrics in sizes infant to eight years old.

Custom made orders can be arranged.

Dancing Dragonfly artist Carol Swann offers handmade soaps crafted with essential oils. Essential oils blends for sprays, healing salves and insect repellents are all made using organic Thetis Island grown ingredients.

Also by Dancing Dragonfly is an assortment of Dichroic Fused Glass Jewellery and other jewellery fun finds.

For your garden, teacup succulents and hand painted banners are also available.

We are open 10-2pm at Marylyn's Farm Stand (69 Pilkey Point Road)

Grab a coffee and a treat and come meet our artisans.

Book & Bake Sale: Many Thanks

This year’s book and bake sale was another successful fundraiser for our lovely library.

20! Volunteers set out the books.   10! Volunteers sold books, beverages and baking.  I sure could not do this event without my dedicated volunteers.  As always, thank you, thank you.

Of course it couldn’t happen without the generous donations of books and baking.
And the generosity of the buyers.  Total raised was $1416.75.

I think the event was even more fun this year with a bbq lunch and Thetis Island merchandise for sale.

Your tired but happy librarian,
Celine

Yard Sale at the Redman's

Our grandchildren made 43.50 for lemonade and cookies.

We made 110.50 on the other sales.

So we will be donating $77.00 to Cancer research for children.

Thanks to everyone who came to our yard sale.

Forbes Hall: Missing Key

The Hall’s Courtside Entrance key went missing sometime during the Book and Bake Sale on Saturday.

The lock box was closed after the door was unlocked first thing which was confirmed by others, and when we went to lock up the hall at the end of the event it was open with the key missing.

We have asked several people who might have opened it not knowing the door was already unlocked, but none of them have it.

Hopefully this posting might trigger an Oops! moment for someone…

Thanks

Ann Dickie
