Call for Nominations to TICA Board

With the upcoming AGM on April 24, the TICA Board is seeking new members for either a one or two-year term.

This is a great opportunity to be part of the exciting reopening and reorganization at the Hall. Positions on the board may involve general hall operations, fundraising, community relations, and programming.

Due to the nature of this virtual meeting there will be no nominations from the floor at the AGM.

Edible Plant and Mushroom Photo Contest!

As part of ThINC's 2020 Community Sustainability and Resilience Youth Program, ThINCpod member, Aislinn Cottell created a handbook guide to the wild edible plants and mushrooms on Thetis Island! Each entry includes two photos and a description with details on edibility and harvesting precautions. The handbook currently contains 28 species, and we hope to expand it over the course of time.

As the handbook was created towards the end of the growing season, our current identification photos are creative commons sourced, and that's where you come in! Over the summer, we will be subbing out these photos with local Thetis Island images, and we would love your help. Over the coming months, please share your best plant and mushroom pics with us. We will be needing two photos per species: one that shows the entire plant, providing scale and overall shape, and one showing a close-up of the leaves, flowers, fruits, gills, etc. Please refer to the existing handbook photos for examples, as well as the list of species we are looking for.

Contest Rules:

• Contest is open until September 20, 2021. (Feel free to send them anytime before then!)
• Any part-time or full-time resident of Thetis Island may enter
• Entry method – email your photo(s), subject line “Wild Edible Plants and Mushrooms of Thetis Island” to aislinn@thetisislandnatureconservancy.org. Please include your full name and the plant/mushroom species depicted
• Image requirements: JPEG high resolution

Winners will be contacted by email the week of September 26th, and names and winning images announced on the ThINC Facebook page. The updated handbook, complete with new photos and credits, will be posted to the ThINC website in October 2021.

Needed Pots for Seedlings

I planted too many seeds! And they all germinated! If you have a stash of 3 or 4 inch pots looking for a good home call Ann at 250-246-8176.

In return I'll bring you some tomato and pepper seedlings when they are ready for transplanting outdoors.

Friday and Saturday Reminder - Forbes Hall Volunteer Call Outs for Cleaning and Moving:

Friday 10am we will be doing the final clean in preparation for moving back in on Saturday.

The remainder of the trim needs wiping, and the floors need washing.

Please wear a mask and bring rubber gloves if you want them.

As COVID restrictions do not allow public meetings, TICA will hold its 2020 AGM virtually via Zoom. Members will be asked to pre-register.
 
More information will be forthcoming in the next few days regarding pre-registration and meeting process and protocols.
 
We appreciate your support and understanding as we find our way through the COVID restrictions.

How the COVID Clinic Registration is Going

The technical staff at VIHA are very happy with how the "test run" of their new online registration process has worked here on Thetis.  The glitches that many people experienced and told us about, enabled them to fine-tune their system.   With around 200 people already registered on Saturday, they are stopping the online registration system for now, and have returned to the regular "register by phone" process.  It's still the same number to call, 877-795-0755, and you'll need all the same information to hand when you call, but they'll register you and give you your date and time on the phone.  You can still call in from 9am to 7pm today (Sunday) and they have extended the time for our special clinic registration to include this Monday, 9am to 7pm, as well.

PLEASE NOTE:  the fact that we may have your name on our clinic list here on Thetis, is NOT the same as being registered for the shot.  VIHA needs everyone to register for themselves (or you can do it for a friend or family member if needed) but we can't do it en masse for the islanders.

So if you want to take part in the COVID vaccine clinic here on Thetis, April 28th and 29th, and you haven't already done so, you need to phone in to be registered today or tomorrow.
