TIVFD: Almost There

Congratulations to TIVFD members Pierre Henry, Johnny Cullen Keidann and Grant Mottershead for passing their First Responder practical medical skills tests on Sunday via live video streaming with the evaluator in greater Victoria.

Due to pandemic regulations this normally face to face course was altered to internet conferences and a whole lot of practice on their own.

After 58 hours of mixed instruction and drilling, and a LOT of study hours and homework, they have now  completed one written exam and the practical exam and have one on-line 150 question closed book exam to complete for their license.

They are doing this for you.

Covid Clinic Update

We have now reached our maximum of the “First 50” vaccinations from our list of Category 1 (born 1941 or earlier) plus several from the Category 2 list born slightly after 1941 or partners of Category 1 people.  This was the fairest way we could come up with the First 50, especially after we were told today by VIHA that partners of over-80s should be included.  ALL OF CATEGORY 1 will get their vaccination on Friday, March 19th and we will get emails to you and the “add-ons” telling you which 15 minute time slot to arrive at on Friday.

DO NOT REGISTER ON LINE OR BY PHONE TO VIHA REGISTRATION. Your contact with
covidclinic@thetisislandfire.ca is your registration. The registration crowd in Victoria is out of the loop and you will only confuse them.

Bring your Care Card number and be prepared to stay at the firehall or in your vehicle for 15 minutes after your vaccination...no sneaking off.  You can enjoy Nan’s coffee at our socially distanced and sanitized tables or sip the nectar in your parked vehicle and one of our volunteer “Road Warriors” will give you the heads up that you can leave when your “time out” is over.

As for the next batch of us:  we have been very forceful in our arguments for vaccinating the rest of us ASAP and all in one day.  We are making inroads.  We may be able to secure a date for the rest of the categories for an April 15th clinic or earlier.  We might even be able to use parts or Forbes Hal, which has a much better view for you 15 minutes of post-shot relaxation.  ID Trustee Bill Dickie and I met with the VIHA representative today (Saturday) and he is very pleased with the Firehall plan and he toured Forbes Hall with Ann Dickie and Ron Bannister and looks forward to working with them when a date for the “mass clinic” is set.  We will keep you informed.

PS. It’s not too late to get on the list for the next clinic.  Email covidclinic@thetisislandfire.ca with your name and birth year.

ThINC Spring Project

Good day Thetis Islanders,

Spring has (almost) sprung!

We’re excited to let you know that we will be launching Project -Re- Generation (ReGen) in April. ReGen is an immersive place- and project-based learning experience designed to inspire, empower, and activate youth through sustainable action-projects that also benefit the local community. As the first session of what we hope will be many (funding dependent), we have organized a small group of homeschool students, ages 12-15 to participate in this venture.

Under the expert coordination of Charlotte Fesnoux from ThINCpod fame, the program will be operating primarily out of the Nature House Monday to Wednesday, from April 6 - May 27 you might see Charlotte and the participants out and about exploring the community . Please be assured that we have a COVID-19 protocol in place and this program will be conducted with utmost care for the health and safety of participants and the Thetis Island community. Over the next few weeks, we will be inviting Thetis Island residents to an on-line information session where you can find out how you can support the program by pitching sustainable action projects to the group or as community experts.

To learn more about the program, please visit our Project -Re- Generation webpage:
https://www.thetisislandnatureconservancy.org/project-re-generation

Hope everyone is doing well,
The ThINC board

March 19 Friday Reduced Covid Clinic

VIHA is bringing ONLY 50 vaccinations to Thetis Island for the first go-round.  This seems to be written in stone and everyone whom we have been dealing with agrees it makes no sense, but that’s the way it is for now.  Those first 50 will go to everyone on our list in Category 1.  We will then add all the 1942 people and probably the 1943 people (possibly 1944) to get to that magic 50 vaccinations.

Thank you for getting on the list.  We are going to proceed with keeping the list up to date and use it when they give the date for the second clinic.  For those of you in Category 2 only:  if you didn’t give us your year of birth, please send it in to covidclinic@thetisislandfire.ca so we can contact you if we can get you into the March 19th clinic next Friday.

Category 3,4,5,6,7 and 8 persons don’t need to send in your exact year.  VIHA still says all of you will be done on the same day at the second clinic TBA.

As per usual, those coming Friday should plan to stay for 15 minutes at the firehall after your vaccination.  We will have coffee and tea and socially distanced tables and chairs for you.

If the ferry is on time, we will start at 09:15.  We will let you know which time slot you will be in.

We will let everyone else know when the full day clinic will be scheduled as soon as we get the info.  Thanks for your patience with this very chaotic process.
(Of course, things may change again when VIHA goes back to work on Monday, lol.)

IMPORTANT ** Covid Clinic Update**

We will definitely be having a vaccination clinic for people born in 1941 or earlier on MARCH 19 next Friday, at the firehall.  We will be getting instructions on how to register soon.

In order to fit more people into that date for the limited number of vaccines coming on March 19th, I have been asked to figure out how many under-80s are interested in getting the covid vaccination.

Please find your category below and email us ASAP.  We will need this info by Monday.  I can then let everyone know which categories can be accommodated next Friday for this first go-round and how many will be attending at the next clinic they schedule.

Category 1.    Born in 1941 or earlier
Category 2.    Born between 1942 and 1946
Category 3.    Born between 1947 and 1951
Category 4.    Born between 1952 and 1956
Category 5.    Born between 1957 and 1961
Category 6.    Born between 1962 and 1966
Category 7.     Born between 1967 and 1971
Category 8.    Born 1972 and later and are now 18 years old or older

Choose your category and send your name to
covidclinic@thetisislandfire.ca
This is not a registration!  This is simply an attempt to gather numbers in the various age categories so that VIHA knows how many people want the vaccination on Thetis and can plan accordingly.

Please let your non-internet neighbours know and ask if they want to get vaccinated and which category they are in and include them in your answer.   Or ask them to call Veronica at 246-1509 and state their category.

BC Cancer and BC Centre for Disease Control have stated that the vaccines are likely very safe for cancer patients.

We are most likely receiving the Moderna vaccine on Thetis Island.
