Environmental Conservation Projects in the Trust Area

We highlight these two conservation projects (below) as examples of what we could do towards ensuring healthy shorelines and resilient forest ecosystems into the future here on Thetis Island. •   Shoreline Protection on Keats Island

Aims to increase protection of the shoreline and to protect development from sea level rise and flood hazards on Keats Island in Howe Sound. Our own Thetis Island community recognizes the environmental values of shorelines, having hosted our own Green Shores Workshops in 2014 as a part of the Thetis Island LTC’s Shoreline project. We celebrate that accomplishment, and as a potential next step are looking to the current work of the Gambier Island LTC, which seeks to protect the marine shoreline on Keats Island.

•  Protection of Coastal Douglas-fir Zones and Associated Ecosystems on Salt Spring Island 

Aims to protect and restore functioning ecosystems, protect watershed ecology, honour Coast Salish cultural heritage, and minimize wildfire risk.  The project was kicked off last November with an online community information meeting that included a presentation by the Islands Trust Conservancy about the CDF zone and its importance.
