AED ~ Thank you!

A big Thank You to all those who attended one of Fire Captain Tom Milliken's six seminars on the new public access Automated External Defibrillator now installed at Forbes Hall.

All together, seventy residents attended and now know what the difference is between a heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest, why we call 911 immediately, and how to use the AED.

The Fire Department is pleased with the interest shown and feel there is a good level of skill and understanding amongst community members to handle a cardiac arrest at the community centre.

We know that a person doesn't learn this skill to help themselves, and it shows what a caring community we have.

Kids Literacy Camp

The library will be offering a literacy/activity program for 6 and 7 year olds from July 7-11.  Each day will include reading one or more books and having fun with a related activity.  Maybe art, math, outdoor, indoor etc.

You may leave your child, grandchild, niece, nephew etc. for a morning activity each day.  Details of hours will be announced.

$10 for the week seems reasonable.  If payment is difficult, we can talk.

Please let Celine know if you are interested or have questions.

Thursday evening at 7 pm is your last chance to attend an informative and fun seminar about the new community centre public AED (how it works, why it works, and how you make it work).  The seminar is at the Firehall and takes about an hour.  If you use Forbes Hall, you will want to know how to use this life-saving equipment.  See you at the Firehall on Thursday evening, 7pm.  You wont be disappointed.

FAC ~ March 3 Meeting with BC Ferries

On Monday March 3rd your local Ferry Advisory Committee met with BC Ferries representatives to review the various ferry schedule options.

Present for the communities were: Sharon Cross; Penelakut FAC, Sue French; Thetis FAC, Art Hunter; Thetis FAC, Keith Rush; Thetis FAC, Carolyn Askew; TICA,  Bill Dickie; Retired Senior Master, Dave Knowles; Deckhand BCF

Present for BC Ferries were: Darin Guenette; Manager Public Affairs, Peter Simpson; Director Fleet Operational Strategy,  Steve Anderson; Manager Fleet Operations,  Captain Lewis MacKay; Route Superintendent

We had a productive and informative meeting that resulted in agreement between BC Ferries and Thetis and Penelakut Islands on a new schedule that will come into effect on April 28th of this year.  The schedule is similar to the ones presented at the meetings at Forbes Hall.  The difference is that there will be no late Friday night sailing.  The last sailing from Chemainus each night of the week will be10 PM.  The other change is that the first sailing on Sunday and every morning from Thetis will be 6:15 AM.  BC Ferries personnel made very clear that the late Friday night sailing was not an option as it was mandated to be cut by the province.

Click here to view the new schedule.

It is possible that there will be minor adjustments to some of the times, but the basic structure will stay the same.  BC Ferries will be announcing and advertizing the new schedule on March 31st.

We have been fortunate to be able to work with BC Ferries and folks from Penelakut to develop this schedule.  A very special thanks to Art Hunter, Dave Knowles and Bill Dickie for all the hard work that they put in to this.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call…

Is Your Home A Green Shores Scenario?

The Thetis Local Trust Committee is looking for 1 to 2 waterfront property owners to offer their properties as hypothetical scenarios for an upcoming contractor workshop on soft shoreline practices. Your property’s shoreline would be visited onsite by contractors and professionals involved with the Green Shores for Homes program, followed by a workshop where your scenario would be given some practical design options that respect coastal processes, protect shoreline habitats and protect your waterfront investment.

The LTC would like to hear from you if you…

  • have an existing challenge on your shoreline that you’d like to fix
  • think your problem is a fairly common one for Thetis property owners
  • have a waterfront that is generally accessible to the public
  • are able to provide site information for your property (site plan, photographs, etc)
  • plan to undertake a capital project in the near future
  • are available in late April/early May

If you think you might fit these criteria and would like to take part, please send a short letter expressing interest (along with your address) by Sunday March 17th to:

Sue French (250-416-0373) sfrench@islandstrust.bc.ca

Peter Luckham (250-246-4802) pluckham@islandstrust.bc.ca.

Summer Nature Camp

The Thetis Island Nature Conservancy is excited to sponsor a summer afternoon "nature camp" program for ages 8-12.  We would like to assess the interest of the community as we proceed with planning this offering. We are currently considering the week of July 7-11, with the approximately 4 hour sessions each afternoon (specific details TBA).

Themes and activities may include: exploring and understanding our local ecosystems (place-based learning), orienteering,  wild crafting and foraging, nature inspired art, music, and movement.

A small fee of $25 per participant would cover expenses and honorariums for junior leaders. Bursaries will be available (please inquire).

If you have children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and/or family friends that would be interested in participating please:

*  call Vicki Walker at 250-246-9126

*  email stephanie.cottell@gmail.com

With thanks,
