On Thursday night, TIRRA sent out an email via mail chimp, notifying all members of a special meeting on October 27th. (This is in addition to the espokes note the next morning.) Because it's a bulk mailing, it may have gone into "Promotions" (if you're on gmail) or some other similar side-track with other servers. Possibly even into spam. So if you are a member of TIRRA, please check that you got it, and if you didn't, please let us know at tirracommunications@gmail.com. And if it went into spam, please add us to your address book so it won't happen again.
Please and thank you!
A big thank you to Matt and Andy for helping Vicki with trail maintenance today. And another big thank you to Ron and Eleanor who went out alone earlier this week to work on the trail. The islanders who use the trail systems are grateful!
Trail Committee
Each week there are scheduled times when a volunteer library attendant is on duty.
We look forward to having you join us, we’re there to answer questions, talk about ideas, and generally there to help you out, if needed. On Sundays we offer tea and goodies – a happy place to meet for a chat with fellow island bibliophiles.
Hours:
Saturday 10:00 am until 1:00 pm
Sunday 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm
Monday 10:00 am until 1:00 pm
The library is always open after 10:00 am when there is a Community Activity at the hall and the entry door is open. We have a simple honour system for signing out books and DVDs, instructions are at the sign out desk. If you need help, ask the attendant on duty. For returns when the building is closed, please use the drop box by the Courtside Entrance.
We hope you enjoy our lovely little island library.
Celine,
your volunteer librarian

The Electoral Boundary Commission has just released their preliminary report on boundary changes. In my opinion the new boundaries do not serve the interests of Thetis or Penelakut Islands.
Growing population means that Vancouver Island is going to receive an additional riding, going from 14 ridings to 15. A new riding in Langford means all up island riding will shift north. Cowichan Valley moves from Herd Road to include all of Chemainus. Nanaimo-North Cowichan becomes Nanaimo-Ladysmith and includes more areas of Nanaimo city..
Thetis and Penelakut are placed in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Riding. This makes little sense. All of our key big island connections are with Chemainus and Cowichan. A Nanaimo-Ladysmith MLA will be representing a region that has little connection to our Islands. We want to ask our MLA to speak up for us on issues ranging such as health services, waste removal, and zoning. This becomes harder when the regional bodies are not based in their electoral district. It is hard enough for us to get the attention of senior levels of government, we don't need additional hurdles.
However, nothing is final, this is only a preliminary report. Please take the time to check out the website (bcebc.ca) and consider making a submission. The commission takes public feedback very seriously and will make changes if enough people speak out. Your opinion will be heard.
Thanks
David Reay
Bat Week
As Halloween approaches, images of scary bats become commonplace. This is the perfect time of year to counter bat myths and do something to help bats, by taking part in International Bat Week (October 24-31). Bat Week is all about appreciating these amazing animals and their benefits, including eating insects, pollinating flowers, and spreading seeds and nutrients.
This BatWeek, consider bat-friendly gardening to help bats! Planting native trees, shrubs, or flowers in your yard, as well as light-coloured and night-blooming flowers, will support the insects that our BC bats like to eat. Controlling invasive plant species also helps insects and bats thrive, so consider a weed-pull in your yard, laneway, or local park or wetland. You can find more information on bat-friendly gardening through the Community Bat Program’s Bat-friendly Communities Guide at www.bcbats.ca. Contact your local bat project to find out about activities happening near you – rmwelsh@telus.net
Why BatWeek? “Bats in BC help control agricultural and forest pests, as well as mosquitoes in our yards - but now bats need our help” says Rob Welsh, Regional Coordinator for the Thetis Island Community Bat Project. “Providing safe and healthy habitat for bats has always been important, since over half the species in this province are considered at risk. With the continuing spread of White-nose Syndrome in Washington State, bat conservation is more important than ever as we expect to see impacts in BC in the near future. ”
BatWeek also marks the time of year when bats disappear from our neighbourhoods, until the return of warmer weather in spring. As insect-eaters our BC bats must leave their summer roost sites and migrate or hibernate to survive the winter. This absence means that this is the time of year to do home renovations that you have delayed due to bat presence. You can clean out and repair a bat box, or do bat-friendly exclusion work, without disturbing or injuring bats.
If you do see a bat in winter, please report it. Monitoring for white-nose syndrome in BC will continue this winter, with Community Bat Programs requesting reports of dead bats or sightings of winter bat activity.
In partnership with the BC Ministry of Environment, and funded by the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, Forest Enhancement Society of BC, Habitat Stewardship Program, and ThINC, the BC Community Bat Program provides information and promotes local stewardship and citizen science. You can report winter bat sightings, find out more about the BC Community Bat Program, BatWeek activities, and options for helping local bat populations, at www.bcbats.ca, rmwelsh@telus.net, or 1-855-922-2287.
