Looking For Summer Accommodation

My family is seeking accommodation for a couple of weeks during the July 15 to August 15 window.

We were guests at Overbury for 44 years and now that they are no longer hosting, we are in need of somewhere new!

There would be 2 adults and possibly others, depending on the space.

Fire Hazard

Returning from a short shopping trip my wife Dianne met me at the front door to unload the frozen items.

I did smell smoke but decided it may be some one’s fireplace. Wrong, I followed the smoke to the front of the house and discovered an old stump blazing away. I yelled at my dear wife, “what are you thinking starting a fire?

She said she has been in the house and was never outside.

I quickly began dousing the small blaze with our precious water supply from barrels filled from our gutters. After the fire was flushed out, I discovered it had been started by the suns rise reflecting off some glass decorations placed near the stump. All this happened just after having a conversation with the fire chief earlier in the ferry line up. The conversation was on my discussion on fire permits and the fact that why was Thetis fire rating at high when most others were at moderate.

The Fire Chief knows best.

Everyone is a Firefighter in Wildfire Season

May is National Wildfire Awareness Month and everyone is a firefighter when you prepare for wildfire season.

- keep your important documents in a fireproof safe, on a USB drive you can take with you if you must evacuate, or store password protected documents online.

- check your home insurance to make sure your home value is current and includes wildfire damage and loss.

- check your household emergency plan and Grab & Go kit - don't forget medications, pets and pet food.

- know more than one way out of your neighbourhood.

- check out the Fire Smart site firesmartbc.ca for tips and info on fire-smarting your home and property.

June Campfire Permit Applications

June campfire permits for small evening campfires will be available commencing June 1st on-line by going to wwwthetisislandfire.ca and navigating to the Fire Permits page.  Please reapply June 1st for a permit.

It is our expectation that we will be able to continue to allow campfires in June that follow the provincial safety regulation. If the local fire risk conditions change during the month that necessitate a recall of the permits, we will post on eSPOKES and the Thetis Island Posts page as well as send an email out to the person who applied for the permit.

Please note that yard waste, burn barrels and other outdoor burning is prohibited at this time.

Also note that only propane campfire appliances are allowed without a permit and in most cases can be used throughout the year because they cause no sparks, no smoke and can be extinguished immediately by shutting off the propane.  We encourage people who enjoy summer campfires to look into purchasing and using a propane campfire appliance.

2nd Call for Those with No Family Doctor in BC

Many thanks to those who have already responded to this survey!

This is a reminder if you missed the first notice:  In order for Thetis to apply for a visiting nurse or doctor's services over here, VIHA wants to know how many islanders do not currently have a primary care physician - this means a family GP, not an oncologist or other specialist.  It is not relevant whether you feel the need for one at this time or not, or whether you would anticipate using the on-island service, whatever it turns out to be.  They just want to know how many people are not registered with a family doctor.

This information will be a very important part of our application for these services on-island.  We don't need any personal information, just numbers. If you and or any members of your family do not have a regular primary care doctor, or if you know of a neighbour or friend who might
be in this category and they don't get e-spokes, please let us know at covidclinic@thetisislandfire.ca

(It has nothing to do with the COVID
vaccinations, but the email address goes to the right place.)

Thank you!

Time to Order Organic Blueberries

Our favourite organic blueberry farm in North Saanich has faced significant challenges operating through the pandemic in 2020. Many of those challenges continue to be present, especially as their wonderful team of pickers won't be at the farm this season. Due to this the farm will be operating at a small capacity this year and thus some changes to their ability to harvest berries.

We will be submitting our order the moment the 'window' opens, as there is a limited supply this year. Also, only fresh, frozen berries will be available. In this way the farm can flash freeze berries and continue to at least supply some to direct farm customers like us.

Price will be $6/lb and the min. order is a 10 lb box. There is no bulk discount this year due to increased expenses for the farm (this is an increase of $0.25/lb from last year).
We are tallying up requests, so please email us asap and let us know how many boxes you would like this year.

We will pick up our order late August or early September.
