Athenia would love to get a kayak for her birthday...Do you have a child's Kayak you no longer use and would like to sell? Doesn't need to be pretty, just usable. Please contact Elite

There has been a flurry of confusion about family, friends and visitors of islanders registering for our community covid vaccine clinic. We are trying to capture the people who live here full or part time and their support people who visit to do things for their aging parents or friends, to babysit grandchildren, who work here, who take part in our community activities on a regular basis, and are generally part of the fabric of our community.
If you are a relative or friend who visits once every few years or used to live here and don't normally still take part in events here, then your community bubble would be elsewhere.
Are you in our community bubble? If yes, then register here.
Questions can still be addressed to covidclinic@thetisislandfire.ca

Hello all,
In a workshop led by Carol Swann, our ThINC ReGen team is hoping to make some dandelion salve in the next couple of weeks, but we first need some dandelions! Does anyone have a large patch of blooming, herbicide free dandelions (400-600) they wouldn't mind sharing with us? Some of our students are getting around via bike, so somewhere in the south island (or off North Cove Road) would be amazing!
Please get in touch with me at charlotte@thetisislandnatureconservancy.org
Thank you so much,
Charlotte
Two volunteers are needed to look through the piles of library boxes to find anything other than books! Probably will not take much more than an hour. Would prefer that both people work together on this. If two people want to pair up, let us know when you plan to be there; otherwise, a day and time can be sorted between those that reply to this post.
Masks are required, and there are doors to open to keep the air fresh. Boxes were packed to be manageable weight-wise, but there are many of them! This job is to be completed by the end of the weekend.
Two – three volunteers are needed to get the storage shelving moved to the correct locations and rebuilt. The units are large and require some skill at basic assembly. They are “snap-together” units. Rubber mallets would be a handy tool to have on hand, as well as gloves.
Masks are required, and there are doors to open to keep the air fresh. The day and time will be arranged between those that reply to this post. This job is to be completed by the end of the weekend.
Four – five volunteers are needed to work on the grounds and driveway area. Please meet at Forbes Hall on Tuesday morning 9:00 am. Please bring shovels, rakes and gloves. Have masks for when you are working within 6 feet of others and wear sturdy footwear.
Please reply to dickie.ann@gmail.com to sign up, or for more information.
Many thanks in advance for the continued participation!

This is a reminder that the COVID vaccination clinic on Thetis is still scheduled for the 28th and 29th of April, and it is open to islanders and their families, visitors and guests. There are still lots of slots open, especially on the 29th, so if you would like to be included, you can register online at
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/getvaccinated.html
or perhaps better still by phone at 1-833-838-2323, as that way you can be sure of being registered for the one on Thetis. Please note that we can't register you, and your being on the original list that we set up isn't the same as being registered with VIHA - they have complete control of the process, so you have to register individually, either yourself or with the help of a friend.
If you have any questions or concerns, email covidclinic@thetisislandfire.ca
Due to the increased outflow WINDS and fast warming weather the southern Vancouver Island fire hazard is rapidly changing. We have already moved up to MODERATE hazard. Bush fires are occurring daily in the Cowichan Valley, all due to backyard burns getting out of hand. Tuesday afternoon Maple Bay had another brush fire called in by a jogger who saw an unattended burn pile escape to the woods. And late Tuesday afternoon several fire halls had to action a brush fire in North Cowichan Municipality and evacuate a family home that was threatened.
For those of you with Yard Waste fire permits valid until the end of April, please keep an eye on eSPOKES daily. If we have to close down yard waste fires due to rapidly changing conditions we will post here.
In the meantime, DON'T LEAVE YOUR BURN PILE UNATTENDED.. Make sure it is totally extinguished before sunset with water so that no embers will blow up during the night.
Thank you,

Thetis Local Trust Committee Spotlight on
Environmental Conservation Projects in the Trust Area
We highlight these two conservation projects (below) as examples of what we could do towards ensuring healthy shorelines and resilient forest ecosystems into the future here on Thetis Island. Should you have any comments or questions for the Thetis Island Local Trust Committee regarding our current and future work program, please contact us - Peter Luckham (pluckham@islandstrust.bc.ca) or Doug Fenton (dfenton@islandstrust.bc.ca).
Aims to increase protection of the shoreline and to protect development from sea level rise and flood hazards on Keats Island in Howe Sound. Our own Thetis Island community recognizes the environmental values of shorelines, having hosted our own Green Shores Workshops in 2014 as a part of the Thetis Island LTC’s Shoreline project. We celebrate that accomplishment, and as a potential next step are looking to the current work of the Gambier Island LTC, which seeks to protect the marine shoreline on Keats Island.
To find out more about the Keats Island project, use the project link above and/or tune in to LTC meetings (upcoming & past) by going to the Gambier LTC meeting calendar and clicking on the meeting date. There you can access the agenda as well as information on how to join the meeting or listen to the live stream. You can also access a recording of the live stream from past meetings.
For more information on the shorelines in the Islands Trust Area and how to care for them, see our Caring for Shorelines page and The Marine Waterfront.
Aims to protect and restore functioning ecosystems, protect watershed ecology, honour Coast Salish cultural heritage, and minimize wildfire risk. The project was kicked off last November with an online community information meeting that included a presentation by the Islands Trust Conservancy about the CDF zone and its importance.
To find out more about the Salt Spring Island project including the Conservancy’s presentation, use the project link above and/or tune in to LTC meetings (upcoming & past) by going to the Salt Spring LTC meeting calendarand clicking on the meeting date. There you can access the agenda as well as information on how to join the meeting, or listen in on the live stream. You can also access a recording of the live stream from past meetings.
For more information on the CDF zone and ways it can be protected, see the Protecting the Coastal Douglas-fir Zone & Associated Ecosystems Islands Trust Toolkit and the Coastal Douglas-fir & Associated Ecosystems Conservation Partnership.

On Monday the Duncan fire department, the Maple Bay fire department, and North Cowichan South End fire department all had emergency responses to brush fires.
These were started by yard waste piles gone bad. Please be mindful of the wind regardless of the GOOD Venting Index and remember that yard waste fires must be attended while burning and extinguished before sunset. Burn responsibly by considering environmental conditions and have your tools and water close by. YOU are the first on scene if your 3metre wide burn pile gets out of hand. And call 911 immediately for fire department back up.
