Compost Project Funding

Did you know that in many communities up to 30% of the solid waste produced is organic material such as kitchen scraps and yard waste?! And in spring 2021, Thetis Island residents imported over $10,000 worth of compost! While many metropolitan areas in BC now offer organic waste collection services, most rural communities, including the Gulf Islands, do not have such services and must find creative means to deal with their organic waste.

In partnership with TIRRA, ThINC is working on a sustainability program proposal this summer to create an island composting system. Many Thetis landfill-bound organic materials could be used to create our own high quality compost on-island, which could be used by local farmers and gardeners. These actions would decrease garbage hauling costs as well as compost importation costs, and foster community sufficiency and sustainability.

In this regard at the TIRRA AGM on June 26th, membership approved support for this initiative in the amount of $500.00, from General Funds. In order to assist in the completion of this project, an additional community support in the amount of $3000.00 is required.

If you are a farmer, a gardener, a business or an individual who sees this initiative as an integral ingredient to island sustainability, please consider a monetary gift (we have no charitable donation status), to TIRRA, to enable these students to get this initiative to the implementation phase.

Please direct your willingness to participate to tirra@thetisisland.net or Box 14-1
