Pooh!!!

Please, to the people who are using the community trails, roadsides and private roads and trails. I walk my two dogs most days and have found human excrement just lying there for both my shoes and the dogs to roll in! If you are caught short while walking at least either put a rock on your pooh or dig a hole and bury it. Let's keep Thetis Island a clean island.

Gloria, Piper and Cooper

Poohed out!

Note from Editor: thanks for speaking up about this!  Yucky and disgusting, but true!

Also, to that someone who has been using paper towels to wipe their dog(?), if you are organized enough to take paper towels on your walk, you should be organized enough to take a bag to take them away in.

AND – if YOUR dog hasn’t been trained to “go” off trail, it is YOUR responsibility to get “it” off the trail.

Compost Project Funding

Did you know that in many communities up to 30% of the solid waste produced is organic material such as kitchen scraps and yard waste?! And in spring 2021, Thetis Island residents imported over $10,000 worth of compost! While many metropolitan areas in BC now offer organic waste collection services, most rural communities, including the Gulf Islands, do not have such services and must find creative means to deal with their organic waste.

In partnership with TIRRA, ThINC is working on a sustainability program proposal this summer to create an island composting system. Many Thetis landfill-bound organic materials could be used to create our own high quality compost on-island, which could be used by local farmers and gardeners. These actions would decrease garbage hauling costs as well as compost importation costs, and foster community sufficiency and sustainability.

In this regard at the TIRRA AGM on June 26th, membership approved support for this initiative in the amount of $500.00, from General Funds. In order to assist in the completion of this project, an additional community support in the amount of $3000.00 is required.

If you are a farmer, a gardener, a business or an individual who sees this initiative as an integral ingredient to island sustainability, please consider a monetary gift (we have no charitable donation status), to TIRRA, to enable these students to get this initiative to the implementation phase.

Please direct your willingness to participate to tirra@thetisisland.net or Box 14-1

There is an Extreme Heat Alert coming into effect this week for our location.

Extreme Heat Alert

While everyone is at risk of heat related illness, hot temperatures can be especially dangerous for the young, the elderly, those working or exercising in the heat, persons with chronic heart and lung conditions, persons with mental illness, people living alone and people experiencing homelessness. If you are taking medication, particularly for mental illness, ask your doctor or pharmacist if it increases your health risk in the heat and follow their recommendations.

Coping with the heat

There are a variety of mild to severe symptoms linked with heat-related illness, including thirst, dizziness, confusion, weakness and fainting or collapsing. Take precautions to protect yourself from the heat, including:

Stay hydrated

• Drink cool non-alcoholic beverages (preferably water) irrespective of your activity intake. Don’t wait until you are thirsty.

• If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask about increasing the amount of water you can drink while the weather is hot.

Keep cool

• NEVER leave children or pets alone in a parked car. Temperatures can rise to 52°C (125°F) within 20 minutes in an enclosed vehicle when the outside temperature is 34°C (93°F). Leaving the car windows slightly open or "cracked" will not keep the inside of the vehicle at a safe temperature.

• Seek out an air-conditioned facility (such as a shopping centre, library, community centre or restaurant).

• Use public splash pools, water parks or pools or take a cool bath or shower.

• At current temperatures, fans alone are not effective. Applying cool water mist or wet towels prior

to sitting in front of a fan is a quick way to cool off.

• Dress for the weather by wearing loose, light-weight clothing. Protect yourself from the sun by

wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.

• Keep your home cool. Open windows, close shades, use an air conditioner (if you have one) and

prepare meals that do not require an oven.

• Avoid sunburn, stay in the shade or use sunscreen with SPF 15 or more.

• Avoid tiring work or exercise in the heat. If you must exercise, drink two to four glasses of non-

alcoholic fluids each hour. Limit day time outdoor activity to early morning and evening.

Check in on others

• People living alone are at high risk of severe heat related illness. Check regularly on older people, and those who are unable to leave their homes, for signs of heat-related illness.

• Ask whether people know how to prevent heat-related illness and are doing the same.

• If others are unwell, move them to a cool shady spot, help them get hydrated and call for medical

assistance if appropriate.

Get informed

• Listen to local news and weather channels.

• For more information on heat-related illness, call HealthLink BC at 811.

Missing Parcel Keys

Once again I am missing Post office parcel keys. They have been missing for quite awhile. They have a blue tag on them with the number 6 on them. I have also found other parcel keys back in the mailbox of the customer who retrieved the parcel.

They belong in the slot above the parcel box once you've picked up your package.

Thank You,

Kevin (Postmaster)

From the Library...

Hello islanders.

Thank you for your generous donations of books and dvds for the annual sale this Saturday 10-1.

I have now maxed out my storage space. No more donations please.

I am looking forward to seeing you at the sale.  It sounds like there will be some great baking to purchase.
